Job Description

Are you interested in building models and creating algorithms to power the world's largest public cloud? EC2 is Amazon's virtual machine compute platform. Many other services are built on top of it-EC2 Spot, Lambda, the Amazon Retail website, and Netflix, to name a few. The EC2 fleet comprises millions of machines in multiple locations, and its management involves complex trade-offs between utilization and capacity availability. Many of the business problems the EC2 Capacity Research team tackles are either concerned with matching supply and demand in the short- to medium term or the detection of anomalous behavior. In a typical project, we analyze large volumes of data, and then develop a predictive machine learning, or a prescriptive optimization model, or a hybrid approach that is frequently validated in simulations. We deliver actionable business information and drive the automated processes of other teams.

A Research Scientist on this team must be comfortable working with large volumes of data and be able to manipulate data using a variety of tools. The ideal candidate possesses a good knowledge and set of hard skills across both predictive (machine learning) and prescriptive (optimization) analytics, or a deep knowledge and advanced skills in one of these two domains. Our customers are as different as the problems they would like to see solved, and the Research Scientist must be able to deal with ambiguity and shifting goals. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
