    Our Story

    It was 1984 (think landlines and lots of paper) when two government relations guys—one at a powerful trade association, the other in-house at a major corporation—had a novel idea of how to better approach GR in the 50 state capitals. Paul Hallman and Steve Markowitz left those good jobs and worked from their living rooms in Washington and New York to form their new business venture: building a network of lobbying firms across the country.

    Paul and Steve’s vision was to save clients time from tedious research and phone calls by providing them with a winning strategy in every state by identifying, vetting, and retaining the right lobbyist with established relationships at preferred rates. Rather than flying to Tallahassee or Topeka on a moment’s notice to battle a bill or chase a procurement, organizations could call MultiState to find a lobbyist who could do it for them more effectively and in a lot less time. This has enabled clients to use their valuable time to conduct other business-critical objectives.

    The model is still going strong today. With more than 60 employees in a real office in beautiful Old Town Alexandria, Virginia and satellite offices around the country including Sacramento, California, the lobbyist network of over 2,000 people remains second to none. The firm has also expanded to include eight complimentary services using in-house expertise and cutting-edge technology to form a true turnkey solution in government relations.

    Over the years, we’ve added legislative and regulatory tracking and research, social media tracking, city and county issue monitoring, lobbying compliance services, coalition management, strategic consulting, and state and local tax policy consulting. We are proud to have revolutionized the state government relations business.
