Currency fills two essential roles in our lives: it serves as a medium of exchange and as a store of value (i.e. debt tracking). The physical representation of money is not particularly important, whether it’s shells or coins or database entries. Ideally money would be free to produce and impossible to counterfeit. Cryptocurrency gets us close to this ideal but it also brings fundamental questions of trust to the forefront. You currently trust both governments and banks to not steal your money (either directly or through excessive inflation), to avoid unreasonable invasion of your economic privacy, and to not unreasonably interfere in your ability to buy and sell things with other people. Will we be able to trust cryptocurrency too?

At MobileCoin, we believe governments have a legitimate interest in regulating the economic lives of individuals within society. Good monetary policies help keep economies healthy. KYC-AML rules help fight criminals and terrorists. We try to avoid extreme ideology at MobileCoin, because cryptocurrencies that attempt to circumvent legitimate societal interests will not survive in the long run.

It seems inevitable to us that cryptocurrency will eventually replace physical money. The balance of power between individuals and governments should be a question of politics. Our job is to create a system that is engineered for performance while transparently encompassing the tradeoffs that society selects.

We are recruiting a small team of highly motivated developers to implement a distributed ledger application. We are seeking candidates with 5+ years of experience on complex software problems, who are familiar with C++ or Rust. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, creativity, and an ability to effectively collaborate as part of a small team of experts. Past experience with Intel SGX or other trusted execution environments, cryptographic communication systems, and/or consensus algorithms is desirable but not essential.
