Database Administrators (DBAs) are skilled IT professionals who work as electronic gatekeepers of data. They are charged with ensuring the integrity, security and performance of a database. DBAs may also be responsible for planning and developing a database management system (DBMS). Other possible duties include maintaining data standards, establishing user access and privileges and installing new DBMS updates.
Database Administrators work in almost every industry. They are often employed in companies or industries that rely on large databases, such as insurance companies, healthcare institutions, colleges and e-commerce firms. Most Database Administrators work full-time, averaging 50 hours or more every week. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects an increase in job opportunities for DBAs, as more companies make the transition to cloud computing.
