The anatomy of a website is remarkably complex. To acheive a clean, functional website, it takes multiple experts, each with an invaluable role. Websites have front and back ends; while the front is what users see, also known as the "client side", the back end, referred to frequently as the "server side," is continually operating, which makes the Backend Engineer arguably one of the most important roles in website creation. Backend Engineers focus exclusively on the "brains" of a website, the behind-the-scenes functionality necessary for the fluid performance website users have come to expect.
The client and server sides of a website continually work together; similarly, Front-End Developers and Backend Engineers work together to ensure seamless operation. Backend Engineers use multiple languages, including PHP, Ruby, Python, Java, and .Net to build different applications during and after a website's launch, plus database creation and maintenance tools like MySQL, Oracle and SQL Server to make necessary and routine changes over time. They also frequently implement cloud computing, security patches and other essential updates. As Backend Engineers work directly with Front-End Developers, they must also understand their most commonly-used tools, including HTML, CSS and JavaScript as well Git and other version-control technologies.
