A Hardware Engineer is required to design, develop, research and test systems for computers and components in order to create new products as well as improve on existing ones. These products often include items such as circuit boards, memory, processors, routers, networks and graphic boards. A Hardware Engineer is vital to any company in the computer technology industry, and as such, demand for Hardware Engineer positions is high across the country.
On any given day, a Hardware Engineer may be responsible for testing and analyzing data from test results and then modifying a design as required, or one might be involved in overseeing the manufacturing process of a given piece of hardware from start to finish. A Hardware Engineer also at times needs to design devices that connect computers or other components to the Internet, such as those in the automobile or medical industry.
Requirements for a Hardware Engineer are much like other computer-related positions. Strong skills in math and science are a must, and having a firm grasp on software and general programming is often preferred. Because a Hardware Engineer will work with a variety of different people on a team from a product start to finish, excellent communication skills are needed as well as the ability to work effectively and efficiently with others. Most of these positions require a bachelor's degree from an accredited computer engineering program, and many positions will need a master's.
